Valentine’s Table Decor ~ The ‘Not-Cutesy’ Edition

Valentine's Day Table Decor | The Elgin Avenue Blog

Rare few things get me as nerded-out as laying a great table setting.

When Oli’s rustling up food for friends and family, I am in my ELEMENT rummaging in our cupboards looking for just the right napkins/cutlery/insert-random-decor item. It’s my bliss.

For me, the setting of a get-together is almost as important as the food and drink/guest list. Everything has to work in harmony.

Great company, a great menu and a great setting?! You know you’re in for a good time!

Go figure then that when Anthropologie reached out to ask if I’d like to style a tablescape in honour of Valentine’s Day, I couldn’t type my VERY enthusiastic response fast enough. Valentine’s table decor, you say?!

All. In.

Here’s how I pulled together an elegant rose-hued tablescape for V.Day.

This is a look which works SO well for Valentine’s, but which won’t date if you fancy whipping it together some other time too. I’ve replicated it a few times already . . . !

The Colour Scheme

White, Rose Pink, Dark Purple, Eucalyptus-Green, Earthy Accents

When it comes to choosing your Valentine’s table decor, it can be easy to fall for an overly-cutesy vibe. However, if you want to buy into items with longevity, I recommend looking for pieces which will last long-past February 14th.

Anthropologie’s Ilana Dinner Plates in pink are perfect. They come in a set of four, which is ideal if, like me, you like to have matching dinner sets to hand. The soft pink is romantic, but it’s not overly-saccharine and will work throughout spring – autumn. Imagine these plates with spice-toned napkins come October! Ahh, I’m SO happy at this thought!

To avoid anything too-twee, I went with multiple textures, dark purple, and unexpected colour combinations including rose-pink, eucalyptus-green and dark purple.

Textures

Linen, Rattan, Artisan Ceramics, Bevelled Glass, Eucalyptus and Olive

Being the Mediterranean-loving gal that I am, I want textures everywhere. My favourite spaces in Menorca (where my family have a holiday apartment) are full of the same accent textures: linen, rattan, wood, exposed plaster, white-washed walls . . .

Though the climate is slightly different in the UK (hahaha!), I like to bring my love of the Mediterranean into our home wherever I can.

For this table setting, I picked up these amazing rattan place mats (love them SO much!), and used them as the centrepiece.

Even when we’re not having people over, I’ve taken to leaving these on the table and popping a couple of vases on top.

Finishing Touches

Fresh Flowers, Mix & Match Napkins, Candles

If you’ve seen any of my tablescapes before, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of a slightly ‘undone’ look. I like to mix and match napkins, and add in flowers and candles of varying heights. Anything too perfect feels a bit sterile.

I keep a stash of candlesticks, napkins, small vases and other decorative objects in our kitchen at all times, so that I can whip them out and see which ones fit on the evening.

A variety keeps things feeling relaxed, and again adds to that Mediterranean vibe I love.

Overall

Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to get your nearest and dearest together. Be it your significant other, besties or family. Putting in some extra effort to a table setting always makes an occasion feel more special.

I’ve already replicated this setup a handful of times since shooting these pics, and I know that these items will be in rotation loooooooong past Feb 14th.

What’s Your Take?

What do you think?! Are you as in love with this rosy-hued tablescape as I am? Do you nerd out over your dinner plate/napkin/candlestick setups too?!

I’d love to know!

Happy Valentine’s for February 14th, whatever you may be up to!

Love, Monica x
