^ ^ Love love love! ^ ^
Choosing your big-ticket furniture takes serious consideration, research and (most likely) a fair few colour swatches! When Oli and I first moved into our new flat we brought our old IKEA sofa with us. That sofa has done SO well over the five years we’ve had it but it was definitely time for an upgrade. Enter: Habitat’s Joshua sofa.
Here’s how we went about choosing a new sofa for our living room . . .
Deciding on a sofa is a big thing! It’s an investment piece you’ll want to keep for a long time, so it has to work perfectly with your space.
Since Oli and I had already had – and loved! – a corner sofa for years, we wanted to stick to the ‘L’ shape.
With the layout of our new living room, an L-shaped sofa helps to create a ‘space within the space’.
If you’re thinking about choosing a new sofa, it’s really important to think about how you’re going to use it. Take measurements and figure out how much space you have, how many people it will need to seat, which way it will be facing . . . !
It will pay off to really visualise a sofa in your home.
Choosing a new colour of sofa for our living room was the hardest part! You can see in the before and after photos below that our old sofa, which was grey, looked quite cold against the soft grey hue of our walls.
But what colour to go for?!
At first Oli and I were leaning towards a blue hue, and we ordered samples of the Acor Fabric in Blue, and the Wool Mix Tweed in Blue too. Then, as a ‘wild card’ I ordered the Wool Mix Tweed in Teal, and as luck would have it, we fell in love with its rich jewel hue.
Going for a deeper colour felt a bit scary, and in the lead up to our sofa being delivered I kept checking the fabric swatch to soothe my nerves, but as soon as it arrived I was over the moon.
The rich colour has added so much depth, and cosiness to the room.
We went with a Wool Mix as the fabric swatch looked so lovely. You can check out which fabrics are available, for which sofa, on the Habitat website.
As you know, I LOVE styling up the spaces in our home.
Given that our new Joshua sofa is such a rich colour, I wanted to compliment it with some warmer accents.
I chose a copper twin head floor lamp, also from Habitat, to frame the sofa on one end. I then moved our marble coffee table, which had previously been in the centre of our living room, to be used as a side table on the other end.
We now have a gap where we need a new coffee table (I’m thinking something rectangular and low) but I love how the sofa looks properly balanced out on either side.
PLUS can we please talk about this vase?! The second I lay eyes on it, it was L O V E. I ordered some pampas grass to style it up, and I’m planning on leaving them to dry out so that I can keep the vase/grass combination going. For my fellow vase-lovers, Habitat have a LOT of gorgeous styles.
Finally: cushions. I was not-so-secretly over the moon to have an excuse to snap up some new cushions to go with our sofa! Haha it’s an obsession!
Again, since the teal colour is so rich, I went with cushions in equally deep hues. These burnt orange cushions from Matalan were a steal, and the faux-Mongolian cushions, also from Matalan, add some texture. I then popped my new Elizabeth Scarlett cushion, in velvet with toucan embroidery, as the centre piece.
Choosing a new sofa was easier than I thought it was going to be, and I completed the whole process online.
The most important steps Oli and I took in the whole process were:
- measuring our space, and comparing it to the dimensions of the sofas we were looking at. Would it be a good fit?
- choosing a style which we knew would work for our home and lifestyle.
- ordering fabric swatches so that we could compare the colour and materials against our current decor, before committing to a sofa.
Overall the whole process with Habitat was seamless. It took around 10 weeks for the sofa to be delivered, we were kept up to date with texts from the brand. It was delivered by two nice gents, and we were able to assemble it within two minutes!
We’ve had our new sofa for a few weeks now and we LOVE it! It’s so so comfortable, and I know that it’s going to be a piece we’ll enjoy for years.
The deeper colour has made the room feel so much more homely, and I’m excited to continue adding warmer elements into the living room.
What’s Your Take
What do you think of our new sofa? Are you thinking of investing in a new piece too? Would you brave a rich colour?!
I’d love to know your thoughts!
Love, Monica x
