Festive Home Decor

Festive Home Decor | Monica Beatrice Blog 2021
Hello! It’s so lovely to see you here! I feel like I’ve spent the majority of the last few months gearing up to Christmas. That may sounds a little pre-emptive but 1. I am married to Mr Christmas (there’s no time of year Oli loves more!) and 2. I am SO freakin’ ready for the good vibes overload that only Christmastime can bring. With that in mind, I am so excited to share some of my festive home decor with you! This is an aperitivo post of sorts, as I have my FULL Christmas decor home tour coming up soon. But I wanted to share some of the more subtle festive home decor updates I’ve made in the past few weeks. These are updates which I think you can get away with earlier on in the season, since they’re more autumnally-festive, rather than out-and-out Christmas. I hope you’ll enjoy having a peruse! I’d love to know if you’re adding any of these festive home decor touches into your own home too!

Festive Home Decor ~ A Few Cosy Updates

A Shift in Hues

One of my favourite ways to make a swift seasonal shift, is by swapping out cool-toned home accessories, in favour of warm-hued ones. Whenever Autumn hits, I find myself drawn to earthy, warm tones, reflective of the season.

I recently picked up these textured khaki cushions in TK Maxx, and love how the darker hue instantly makes the room feel cosier. I also found this printed tablecloth in a warm burgundy colour, again from TK Maxx Homeware and am so excited to style it up with a full tablescape. TK Maxx is an absolute treasure trove of homeware, isn’t it?! I can spend HOURS in there.

In general, swapping cushions, accessories and flowers is my favourite ~ and most speedy ~ way to make a seasonal home decor change. A ‘room dressing’ swap is almost instant, relatively inexpensive and you can store out of season pieces easily, ready to be swapped back in. I keep cushion covers, vases, candles and other trinkets in a cupboard ready to be swapped around seasonally. Also, peep those burgundy candles . . . LOVE!

DIY Fireplace Garland

I have been promising a fireplace garland tutorial for years! This year I finally got my ducks in a row and created a tutorial which I shared over on Instagram; you can watch my Reel on how to add character to a faux garland here.

My biggest takeaway? If, like me, you like a more wild and undone look, go for blooms and stems which dry well, since they’ll be up for a while, and add volume. More is more! I like hydrangeas and eucalyptus, but you could also add thistle, pampas grass, bunny tails . . . anything which works harmoniously with your overall decor. And which will hold its shape. Geneva has a great guide to dried flowers over on her blog.

Nowadays many florists offer dried flower arrangements as well as fresh ones; I recommend checking out Bloom & Wild, Etsy and Catkin & Pussywillow for beautiful dried blooms. You can also try your local flower wholesaler, since you’ll often get larger volumes of flowers and foliage for a better price. I buy most of my flowers from Dutch Masters and dry them myself.

There is nothing like a true GLOW to make a room feel cosy. An open fire, candles and warm twinkly lights all help to create an ambience.

Ols and I added dimmer switches to most of our main room lights so that we have the ability to adjust the brightness depending on the time of day. This has been a game changer when it comes to creating a more cosy vibe in the evenings.

I love using floor lamps, and table lamps to add pools of light around the room too. I recently shared a lighting guide over on Furniture Village’s Instagram account which shares more tips on this subject ~ you can watch my video on how to create mood lighting here.
