5 Home Updates for the Cosy Seasons

Perhaps it’s because I’m an Earth Sign—proud Capricorn over here!—but the moment the leaves begin to turn amber I am ALL in on autumn. Fiery leaves, icy-but-sunny weather, and a spiced coffee in hand—just some of my autumnal highlights. Whilst I love everything that goes on outside during the cooler seasons, there is so much to love about being home too—you can upscale the cosy vibes BIG time! Just recently I made some home updates for autumn which I’m sharing with you below. If you’re in the market for a hygge upgrade too, I hope you love diving into this post!

5 Home Updates for the Cosy Seasons

  1. Heating. On.

The moment the temperature drops I turn our heating on. I love the feeling of padding around our kitchen in the morning, warm and cosy after a good night’s sleep. I make my coffee first thing and curl up on the sofa to watch some Hallmark goodness. NB: I ration my Hallmark movie watching for autumn months only. So I really look forward to it. Soaking up some cheesy movie goodness is a GREAT way to start the day. And round it off too! Just swap the coffee for wine.

If you’re thinking of getting your heating going again too, it’s so important to check your boilers. Oli and I did this a little while back, and I’m so glad we got our boiler serviced before the cold set in.

If you’re on the lookout for your own go-to tradespeople I recommend checking out Local Heroes.

Backed by British Gas, Local Heroes is a platform which helps to match skilled and vetted local tradespeople with your needs. You can set yourself up on Local Heroes and manage negotiations and time slots on the platform. SO handy!

Local Heroes also has a great boiler advice guide, which is well worth looking over before you get your heating going again. The guide includes red flags to look out for, like your bills creeping up, odd sounds and radiators taking an age to heat up.

Have you got your heating going yet?

  2. Autumnal home decor accents

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll have seen that I recently purchased a few decorative pumpkins. Having spent so much time at home this year, I’ve been itching to make some simple home decor updates which change up the vibe of our flat, much like I did for summer.

A change of seasons is the perfect excuse to shuffle things around!

I added some sweet miniature pumpkins to our mantel, and moved a few decorative pieces around to go with a more neutral and harvest-inspired colour palette. Out with the pinks and blues, and in with neutral earthy colours.

    Speaking of which . . .

  3. Autumnal flowers & dried arrangements

Bringing autumnal flowers into my home is undoubtedly one of my favourite ways to mark the shift in the seasons.

Just recently I popped to my local flower wholesaler and stocked up on a collection of harvest-inspired blooms. I created a fresh bouquet Oli and I could enjoy at home for a week or so and also dotted some new dried flowers around which will last the season.

Plus! I added some new pampas grass into the mix. If you love the look of flowers, but don’t always want the maintenance or expense of fresh blooms, I can’t recommend dried arrangements enough.

  4. Layering textiles

Cushions. Blankets. Wall hangings. Layering textiles is where it is AT during the cooler months. Oli and I have a big basket full of blankets next to a sofa nook in our living room, and we reach for them constantly.

This is a great time of year to look for textured wall hangings too, which add warmth and depth to your room. I picked up this wall hanging for £3.50(!!!) at my local charity shop. And I LOVE it!

If you’d rather go down a DIY route you could even create your own wall hangings.

  5. Candles

There is nothing quite like soft pools of candlelight to make a room feel capital-C-Cosy! I light candles all year round, but have my go-to scents for different seasons.

As soon as autumn hits I reach for my spiced candles. I also love amber scents, and anything with aromatherapy oils.

Usually I light a mix of scented and non-scented candles so that perfumes don’t overlap too much. And of course, soon enough we’ll be lighting our fire too. Bliss!

OVERALL

This year has presented so many challenges, but a change in seasons is always a great excuse to start afresh. Autumn is the perfect time to update your home, get on top of any niggling housekeeping—ahem, boiler servicing!—and embrace all the good cosy vibes.
