7 Simple Home Decor Updates, For Little Or No Money

Simple Home Decor Update | The Elgin Avenue Blog

I have a roster of simple home decor updates I go to when I feel like my home needs a little refresh.

Since springtime is upon us, and most of us are spending a lot more time at home than usual, I thought I’d share some of the super simple things I do to make my home feel new, for little or no money.

7 Simple Home Decor Updates, For Little Or No Money

1 – De-Clutter

A de-clutter is easiest way you can make your space feel fresh.

Oftentimes a room feels tired, just because it’s messy.

If you feel like your space is not as welcoming as it could be, try starting with a clear-out.

There are so many schools of thought when it comes to de-cluttering, but a simple method which works for me, it to move all random clutter to a separate room. (I like to use my kitchen table specifically.)

Then sort it out there.

Oftentimes when I look at the bits of clutter all gathered together, in a fresh space, I know exactly where they need to go.

Whether that’s somewhere else in the flat, into a donation pile, or into the bin!

2 – Move Furniture Around

Magic happens when you move your furniture around!

I remember in our old flat, I moved my desk spur of the moment one day, and it changed everything. The whole energy of my home office felt different, and I couldn’t believe what a difference such a simple change made.

You can try moving furniture around, to make better use of your space. Or try re-purposing items for different uses.

Oli and I have a few small tables that we periodically use for different things: a bedside table, coffee table, side table. (See above!)

By switching things up every now and then it almost feels like we’ve bought something new.

Moving items you already have in your home, into another space, gives them a new lease of life.

I do this ALL the time, and it really helps each room to feel fresh again, without spending a penny!

3 – Update Your Cushions & Cushion Covers

Cushion-lover loud and proud over here!

Updating your cushions has to be one of the easiest ways you can change up your home decor. I have a bunch of cushion covers which I rotate, depending on the time of year.

Right now I’m using my lighter colours since we’re in spring, and heading into summer. When the cooler months roll on round I’ll change the covers again to something darker.

Some of my go-to places for cushions and covers are: H&M Home, Himla, Anthropologie, La Redoute and markets too.

Even if you don’t have surplus cushion covers, you can just switch around your cushions.

Take a look at the various sofa/cushion combinations below to see what a difference it makes!

4 – Forage For Foliage & Flowers

Since lockdown I’ve missed picking up flowers from our local florist and market.

Fresh flowers and bits of nature are such a happiness boost, and so I’ve been focusing on foraging flowers from our garden intead.

I chose a couple of small branches from a blossom tree to bring indoors recently and they’re thriving!

I love the look of an interesting branch placed in a vase too.

Herbs like rosemary also look beautiful, both in an arrangement, and even in a small pot which you can use as a tablepiece.

Get creative!

5 – Change Your Artwork

Isn’t it amazing how used to something you can get? By seeing the same things day in day out, they can kind of blend into the background of your home.

By moving things, you get to see them in a fresh light.

Try swapping your artwork around.

Or, if you’re anything like me, finally fill your empty frames!

You don’t have to have ‘real’ artwork to frame.

You can paint your own, or download an art print, or frame something that’s special to you.

6 – Re-Purpose Bowls & Dishes As Decorative Objects

A styling trick I use all the time is to repurpose dinnerware as a decorative object.

When Oli and I were in Menorca right after our wedding, we wanted to purchase something which we could treasure as a momento of our mini-moon. We ended up in a beautiful boutique shop, which had incredible dinnerware.

Whilst it would have been SUPER nice to have bought a full dinner set (and suuuuuper expensive ????!) we decided to purchase a few individual bowls intead to place around our home.

I actually think that we appreciate the dishes more as decoration than we would do if we were to eat from them!

If you have a certain platter, or bowl, or dish that you love, consider re-purposing it as decor.

7 – Switch Up Your Scents

Have you ever noticed how impactful a good scent it? Like when you walk into a boujis shop and they have a fantastic candle burning? Or you step into a garden and you’re hit by the heady smell of flowers?

Smell is our strongest sense, and yet I feel like we often under-value it in our home.

If you want to freshen up your space, try introducing a new aroma.

Now that springtime has hit I’m opening our windows allll day long. Just having fresh air is a boost!

I’m also digging out all of my scented candles, and rotating them depending on my mood. Some of my favourite candle scents are:

OVERALL

Small changes can create a big impact in your home. And, for the most part, you don’t need to spend a penny!

I like periodically changing things around to keep the flat feeling fresh and inspiring.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

Do you make little updates here and there too? If so, what do you do? I’d love to know!

Love, Monica x
