“We all lead busy lives, and ultimately that means we have to find time to fit in our priorities where and when we can.

If like me, exercising and being active is a top priority, then curating a wardrobe which easily assists you going from gym to general life is surely something worth looking into?

I know that if I want to make time to workout, exercise has to work with my schedule, not against it, and having a carefully curated workout-to-work wardrobe is part of that.”

From positive pairing, to the power of a monochrome workout wardrobe – here’s exactly how you can go straight from the gym into general life!

Last week’s deep dive into exercising (Part 1 & Part 2) received such an amazing response! Many of you reached out via email – and even IRL – to let me know that you too are embarking on a journey with your personal wellbeing.

It makes me so happy to learn that this little corner of the internet can lend a hand in helping you to pursue your own health and wellbeing goals.

I hope today’s post will be a little extra nudge in the activewear direction too.

I am so thrilled today to partner with Jigsaw, and their new capsule curation of ADAY activewear, to bring you my personal take on how to go from the gym to general life.

Is it possible to truly wear your gym-wear in real life? Totally!

And trust me when I say, when you start wearing activewear outside of the gym, you’ll be hard-pushed to go back!

It’s so comfortable and so convenient, many days at The Elgin Avenue HQ have become decidedly more sporty in aesthetic.

I hope you’ll enjoy today’s post, and take some tangible advice away about incorporating activewear into your day to day.

If you are looking for some truly luxurious high-quality gym wear, I have an inclination that you’ll fall head over heels for Jigsaw’s curation of New York-based label ADAY. Having had the chance to try the collection myself I can confirm it is comfortable, practical and insanely stylish.

Gold zippers? A crop top cut just ‘so’? Intelligent fabrics for work-to-workout? Y E S on all accounts!

3 Tips For Going From The Gym To General Life

1 – Carefully Select Your Activewear Wardrobe

The ability to go from the gym to general life, largely rests upon the quality of your activewear wardrobe.

If you are working out in hole-y old leggings and your boyfriend’s T-shirt, you are less likely to feel comfortable going straight to brunch (or anywhere) from the gym.

As a general rule, if you are planning on focusing on your health and wellbeing goals, I suggest investing in some quality technical clothing.

I love the whole ethos behind ADAY, as this interview with the brand’s co-founders Nina Faulhaber and Meg He shares:

“We love normal pants, T-shirts, and sweatshirts. ADAY is designed to feel like your normal wardrobe, only with different qualities.”

ADAY isn’t athleisure as you know it, it is an adaptation of your normal clothing, in breathable fabrics so you can easily and confidently go from the gym, into general life.

We all feel better when wearing an outfit which makes us feel great, and this goes for your workout wardrobe too. I know I feel more inclined to go to a yoga class, or head to the gym, when I have my favourite gym-wear clean and ready for me to use.

And here’s the thing – your activewear wardrobe can be a unique blend of both practicality and style. Your curation can hit that fashion sweet spot which assists you in wearing your gym-wear in general life.

So, what do you need to look for when selecting your activewear wardrobe?

  • Flattering leggings or jogging trousers.

I absolutely adore these jogging bottoms by ADAY. When I first tried them on I actually did a little ‘happy dance’ around the living room in them (to Oli’s amusement) – I was so thrilled to find a pair of activewear trousers which are that comfortable and that stylish.

The leg length is just ‘so’, the waist band is high enough to cover the bellybutton (bellybuttons on show never feel comfortable for me) and the pockets have a fine gold zip which I just ❤️.

Bonus – a great pair of leggings or trousers are the perfect foundation for building a chic multi-purpose outfit.

  • A sporty top layer.

One of the key things in going from the gym, into general life, is finding a ‘top layer’ which can work for the gym and elsewhere. The ‘Like A Boss’ Funnel Neck Sweatshirt by ADAY is both sporty and chic for heading to your next stop after the gym.

You can easily wear it in your day to day life too – it would look great with Mom jeans and box-fresh trainers.

  • A colour palette which works with the rest of your wardrobe.

I almost exclusively wear monochrome for working out. It means I can easily mix and match my pieces, and it helps me to feel pulled-together even when I am working up a sweat. The entire ADAY curation by Jigsaw is an eye-pleasing mix of black, dark grey, white and navy which makes mixing and matching super easy.

2 – Make The Gym Part Of A ‘Positive Pairing’

As regular readers will know, I am a podcast fiend, and one of my favourites is the Happier podcast by Gretchen Rubin and Elizabeth Craft.

As this article by Gretchen shares in more depth, positive pairing can help reinforce good habits.

For me, I make it to my weekend gym class, and follow it up by treating myself to a coffee from my favourite coffee shop. The gym and the coffee shop are a positive pairing.

You can try a positive pairing which assists you in going to the gym too. Try arranging brunch with a friend right after a gym class. Or taking your laptop with you, and heading to a lovely coffee shop to get some emails done after your workout.

By creating a positive pairing you are more likely to attend the gym, as you have something else to incentivise you. I also find it more productive to try and make your trip to the gym about more than just working out.

3 – Dry Shampoo Is Your Best Friend

Some people can’t bear the thought of leaving the gym without showering. And some people can’t think of anything worse than tip toe’ing around the changing rooms trying to get showered and ready.

There is one thing I for sure never do at the gym – and that’s wash my hair. I hate washing and drying my hair at the best of times, and I can’t think of anything more time-consumingly boring than washing and drying my hair after a workout.

I want to go get that coffee instead!

Hallelujah then for dry shampoo!

I like to keep a small travel-sized bottle in my gym bag, and spritz it into my hair once I’ve finished my workout. This helps to refresh your roots if you’ve been working up a sweat.

This is my number one beauty trick for going straight from the gym to general life. A quick spritz of dry shampoo and you are ready to tackle your next task.

Ultimately . . .

We all lead busy lives, and ultimately that means we have to find time to fit in our priorities where and when we can.

If like me, exercising and being active is a top priority, then curating a wardrobe which easily assists you going from gym to general life is surely something worth looking into?

I know that if I want to make time to workout, exercise has to work with my schedule, not against it, and having a carefully curated activewear wardrobe is part of that.
