Health is really important to me, and something which I grew up caring about. My parents always impressed upon my sister and I how health underpins everything.

That being said, my approach to wellbeing is very easy going.

I’m not an exercise fanatic and I definitely enjoy my wine, but I also value feeling good and energised.

Incorporating simple healthy focuses into my every day helps me to stay on track with my wellbeing.

I hope you’ll enjoy diving into these simple habits with me! I’ll be focusing on them all for a healthy and happy year ahead!

1 – Move every single day (at least a little!)

In Gretchen Rubin’s book, Better Than Before, Rubin shares how it’s easier to stick to a habit you do every day, as opposed to a habit you do once in a while.

A gym class every day may be too much of a commitment, but a 30 minute walk is do-able.

What can you do every day, to move your body and get some exercise in?

This is so important to your overall health, both physically and mentally.

Give it some thought.

Whilst we’re on the subject, new sportswear makes moving your frame a lot more tempting, right?! I just stocked up on some gorgeous new pieces from The Sports Edit which have made my exercise commitment a whole lot more appealing.

2 – Embark on a ‘proper’ food shop

Spending a bit of time planning your meals and your food shop will save you money and help you to make healthier food choices.

I find that even five minutes of planning can help hugely!

I love this ‘grocery guide’ on The Everygirl and this meal-planning guide by Anna is also great.

3 – Switch to clean(er) beauty

Last year I made a real effort to get to know clean beauty brands.

Switching your skincare and beauty choices to cleaner options is not only better for you, but for the environment too.

I consider Geri Hirsch of Because I’m Addicted to be the doyenne of clean beauty, so I’ll leave you to explore her archives. But overall making the switch is a VERY good thing indeed.

Here are a few of my favourite clean beauty brands RN:

Maria Nila (for haircare)

Quantum Botanika by Nataliya Robinson

REN Clean Skincare

NEOM Organics

4 – Find Your Perfect Blend Of Supplements

I’ve been taking a concoction of supplements for the last few years which has made a huge difference to my overall wellbeing.

My skin has cleared, my symptoms of PMT have eased off, I have more energy and I sleep better.

I have been following Alisa Vitta’s guide to supplements which ease hormonal acne.

These include: Magnesium, Omega-3s, Zinc, Probiotics and B Vitamins. I also take a Vitamin D supplement.

Madeleine Shaw also recommends a similar edit.

This year I encourage you to figure out which supplements work for you too. You can do this by seeking the advice of a professional, or looking up supplements to treat a particular symptom.

(Disclaimer – by no means am I a health expert – so please do your own research on this one or seek advice from a professional.)

5 – Practice A Kinder Internal Dialogue

Do you say things to yourself which you wouldn’t dream of saying to a friend? Yep, me too!

Just recently Oli complimented me on something which I often berate myself about. It reminded me of how hard we can be on ourselves, without any justification.

So, this year, I hope that you and I can both practice a kinder internal dialogue.

Be empathetic, congratulatory and generous with yourself.

6 – Sleep Well

Yes, oh yes.

Here’s my guide to a better night’s sleep in case you’re in need of a few tips.

7 – Get Outside

Oli and I have spent the last five days down in Devon with our great friends James and Georgie.

NB they have a beautiful holiday cottage which you can rent out: Soar Mill Cove.

It’s incredible how restorative spending time outdoors in the fresh air can be.

We all feel more energised, refreshed and are sleeping better.

Wherever you live, this year I encourage you to step outside more often and take some time in the fresh air.

8 – Surround Yourself With Positive People

I wrote about this in my piece for Bloom & Wild – surrounding yourself with ‘radiators’ will boost your mood and lift your spirits.

The people who leave you feeling great, who support your dreams and console you on rubbish days are the people worth spending time with.

9 – Enjoy social media mindfully

I love social media, it makes up a huge part of my business and I enjoy it on a personal level too.

That being said, it’s so important to enjoy it mindfully as the comparison trap can easily set in. Plus it’s so tempting to quench boredom by reaching for your phone.

Instead this year try and edit out any social media accounts which give you an ‘icky feeling’. Any people who make you think less of yourself – simply unfollow. I did a lot of this last year and it left me feeling much more positive about my feed.

I’ve also been practising alternative antidotes to boredom. Try tackling a chore, reaching for a book or magazine, or even texting a friend instead of scrolling through social media. It will be so much more rewarding.

10 – Go With The Flow

‘Going with the flow’ has been one of the greatest lessons I’ve ever learnt.

Instead of resisting the ‘course’ I’m on, I’ve learnt to lean into whatever’s happening and ‘go with it’.

It’s been so impactful that I even created a motivational quote poster in its honour. You can shop my Go With The Flow poster here.

Overall

I love taking a broad approach to the new year. Focusing on a handful of wellbeing habits feels achievable, and I’ll be referencing this list often.

What’s Your Take?

Do any of these habits ring true with you? I’d love to know if there are certain ones you’re excited to get on board with? Or any you already enjoy practicing?

Love, Monica x
