Christmas Decorations Tour – 2018

December 24, 2018

Traditional Christmas Decorations Home Tour | The Elgin Avenue Blog 2018

What a way to round off the Christmas build up! My first ever Christmas decorations tour!

As I type Oli is mid-way through cooking for eighteen (our tradition on the 24th), the Christmas playlist is on loop and there *may* be a bottle of fizz chilling for a little pre-hosting courage.

This festive season has felt truly magical, and I am so excited to kick-off our family celebrations this evening.

As I hang up my keyboard for a few days, I’m over the moon to leave you with this . . . a special tour of our Christmas decorations! I was inspired by two of my favourite bloggers – Claire of The Green Eyed Girl, and Rebecca of Roses and Rolltops, who both shared stunning tours of their own homes decorated for the season.

This is our first Christmas in our new flat and I feel like all of Oli’s festive dreams have come true! He is Mr Christmas for real!

Here are the key decor elements we’ve focused on this year. We’ve kept everything in our living room, which is our main entertaining space in the flat. We tried to go for decorations which felt harmonious with our overall look.

I love the result! And I hope that you’ll love having a little peek too . . .

The Tree

The first thing Oli said when we viewed this flat was “imagine the Christmas tree!”.

I knew then that if we were lucky enough to move into this place, that we would have to have as biiiiiiig a Christmas tree as we could fit!

As such we ended up going for a 12ft Christmas tree from an amazing local vendor – Burcot Farm.

We’ve bought our trees from there over the past few years and always find that the choice is huge and the quality is great.

Spot the vintage toy train looping round the bottom too! Such a lovely gift from Oli’s Dad, who is an avid toy train collector. This is a vintage Polar Express set.

Tree Decorations

For the Christmas tree decorations we went with a monochrome gold look.

In our last flat we had gold and red decorations, but as soon as we started to decorate the tree it became clear that red clashed with the rest of the living room.

Instead (on Oli’s suggestion!) we went for all gold, with a few natural elements like glittery pine cones, and hints of copper.

We went for warm white lights (about 100ms of them!!!) and I am SO happy with the overall effect. It’s so beautiful.

Sometimes I just come and sit in this room to relax and ogle the tree – ha!

The ‘base baubles’ are all from multipacks which we picked up at Tesco. I think they were about £5 for 40 or something amazing like that!

We then added in precious decorations which we add to over the years. Some are from Liberty London, some collected on our travels, and this year Sass & Belle very kindly sent some super cute ones!

I’ve highlighted a few of my favourite decorations below . . .

Window Wreaths

Both Oli and I love window wreaths!

After seeing some gorgeous images on Pinterest and on peoples’ Instagram accounts, we decided to seek out our own window wreaths.

We found them at a brilliant flower wholesaler – Dutch Masters – and promptly snapped two up.

We then added some ribbon, bought from our local florist – Wild Bunch – and then wound some battery-operated copper lights around the wreaths. I used some florist wire to secure the battery packs which worked a treat.

Bauble Bowl

There were a few baubles which didn’t work with the colour scheme of the tree, but which I wanted to display because they’re so pretty!

I repurposed this lovely bowl from La Redoute and popped all of my favourite baubles in it.

I love the end result!

Eucalyptus Garland

I love love love eucalyptus, and at any point in the year have numerous bunches dotted around our home.

It made sense then that at Christmas time I would use my favourite foliage to create a fireplace garland.

This was so easy to make, I didn’t even follow a tutorial. I just kind of made it up as I went along – ha!

I measured the mantle, and then measured out the same width on our kitchen table – luckily they were exactly the same! I then popped a piece of tape in the middle of the table so that I could build the garland equally on each side.

It was then a case of starting with a middle bunch of eucalyptus, and building each side outwards. I used florist’s wire, and kept adding foliage until it looks about right. Cut-offs from our Christmas tree made the perfect addition for a bit more texture.

Finally I added a beautiful white velvet ribbon, in a big loopy bow to the centre.

I think I’ll be making a new one every year from here on out! It’s one of my favourite things in our home right now.

Oh and I popped another set of battery-operated copper lights into the mix.

Fireplace Styling

Side note – so happy with our new light fixture!!! Yayyy! Will share more about that another time soon!

Other than the eucalyptus garland, I also swapped out our white candle stick holders, for a couple of new gold-toned ones. I also picked these up at Dutch Masters.

The thin gold candle stick holders are from H&M home, and I popped in some pretty coral candles to add a little colour into the mix.

Finally, I used a couple of gold-coloured accessories we already had – a storm lantern, and a gold star – as accents on either side of the wood burner.

Overall

I love having our home styled up for Christmas! It feels so cosy, and having fairy lights on every day is pretty magical.

I’m so glad that we stuck to our guns and went for decorations which work harmoniously with the overall feel of our flat.

I want to recreate this every year!

Merry Christmas!

I’m signing off of the blog now for a few days over the Christmas period! Thank you so much for being here and for your support ❤️ I am truly so grateful.

I hope that you enjoy a wonderful festive few days – whatever you are doing. And that you are able to rest, enjoy the company of loved ones, and enjoy some deliciousness!

Sending a big hug your way!!!

Love, Monica x
